Croatia info

Croatia can be classified by its location as a Central European and Mediterranean country, i. e. as a Pannonian-Adriatic country. Croatia inherited the tradition of a state since the medieval principality (791-924.) and kingdom (925-1102). The Republic of Croatia was declared on 25th June 1991. The population of Croatia is estimated at 4, 8 million people. Its capital is Zagreb. The official language is Croatian.

The 5835 km long coastline consists of 1185 islands, islets, rocks and reefs, as well as of many bays and peninsulas. The largest peninsulas are Istria and Pelješac.

A fertile Pannonian Valley provides a lot of opportunities for agricultural development, while the Adriatic coast enables the development of fishery, shipbuilding and especially the development of tourism. Mountain Croatia provides traditional activities specified with the region, such as forestry and cattle breeding, there are also good conditions for development of winter and rural tourism. Croatia's highest mountain, which makes a part of the natural border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, is Dinara with the highest peak of 1831 m, also called Dinara.

Croatia borders with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Slovenia, Serbia and Montenegro. Croatia is territorial-administrative divided into 21 counties, including the city of Zagreb with a status of the county.

Croatia has 8 national parks, 10 nature parks, over 100 caves, a rich sea life with more than 1000 islands. By biological diversity, Croatia is one of the richest countries in Europe.

Croatia has three climate zones: In inland prevails a continental climate, on the highest parts prevails a highland climate and along the Adriatic coast a pleasant mediterranean climate with many sunny days. The summers are dry and hot, winters mild and wet.

With an average of 2,600 hours of sunshine a year, the Adriatic coast is one of the sunniest in the Mediterranean, the sea temperature in the summer is 25 ° C to 27 ° C.

The official currency in Croatia is kuna (1 kuna = 100 lipa). Foreign currency can be exchanged at banks, exchange offices, post offices, travel agencies, hotels and campsites. Credit cards (Eurocard / Mastercard, Visa, American Express and Diners) are accepted in almost all hotels, marinas, restaurants, shops and at ATMs.

Croatia has a highly developed highway network. Croatia has now over 1 400 kilometers of highways connecting Zagreb with other cities.

In 2005 a new highway, A1, was opened, which connects the two largest cities in Croatia- Zagreb and Split. Highway A2 runs from the Slovenia border to Zagreb. A3 goes through the Pannonian Croatia, from Bregana to Lipovac. A4 goes from Goričan at the Hungarian border to Zagreb. A5, so called “Slavonika” connects Slavonia, Osijek and Baranja with Zagreb and the Adriatic coast. A6 highway connects Zagreb and Rijeka. A8 and A9 highways form an Istrian Y.

By political structure Croatia is a parliamentary democracy. She is a member of the United Nations since 22 May 1992. Croatia is a member of the Council of Europe, of the World Trade Organization, of The Central European Free Trade Agreement and of The North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Croatia is a member of NATO since April 1st 2009; Croatia began negotiations on accession to the European Union on 3rd October 2005.
